On a 1993 honda civic 4 cylinder what would cause the engine to shake with a tapping noise on a manual?

I bought a car from my brother in law a month ago. Yesterday I was driving the car and the engine would cut off in traffic and when I got it to a parking lot it cut off. When I turned the engine on it would only move a few inches and turn off. I looked online and it said check the oil. When I went to change the oil I found that there was no oil in the car plus it was a sludgy black. I put oil in it with a cleaner and the car was able to stay on permanently but the engine was shaking violently and it has a loud tapping noise. Some said it was the piston, and some said it was the lifter. ANY MECHANICS OUT THERE, HELP! PLEASE! I am trying to find out if it is worth keeping the car.
