Why does some people in solitary confinement become mentally insane?

Just curious because I visited Philly yesterday and took a tour in the Eastern State Penitentiary where some prisoners became mentally insane when they were in their own cells 23/7. I'm no talker myself, so I dont see how people could lose their minds over not talking.
